Short course
Fundamentals of Suspicious Activity Transaction Reporting
This workshop will prepare participants to create and submit useful reports that support the organisation's compliance goals.
Overview
About this course.
Clear, well-supported Suspicious Activity/Transaction Reports (SAR/STRs) help law enforcement and other agencies act effectively on the information they receive — while poor-quality SAR/STRs can undermine enforcement outcomes. This brief workshop equips participants to recognise when a report should be filed and to write a focused, factual narrative suited to its intended audience.

Curriculum
What you will be able to do.
1. Identify scenarios and transaction patterns that would warrant a SAR/STR filing.
2. Adequately and consistently detect suspicious activity within their area of responsibility.
3. Distinguish between reasonable suspicion and evidentiary proof when deciding to file.
4. Construct a SAR narrative that applies the 4 Cs — clear, concise, complete and chronological.
5. Apply confidentiality and “tipping off” rules correctly when handling a report.
6. Recognise and avoid common drafting mistakes that reduce a SAR’s usefulness to law enforcement.
7. Identify the intended audience for a SAR and tailor the narrative accordingly, avoiding unhelpful jargon.
8. Describe what happens to a filed SAR during a police investigation, including the use of Production Orders.Pre-requisites
